Iterative Prompting in Action

Practical Insights for Skeptics & Users Alike…in (Roughly) Two Minutes or Less

"The writer is an explorer. Every step is an advance into a new land."

- Ralph Waldo Emerson (a man who, I am quite certain, would hate AI….)

Yesterday, we talked about the concept of Iterative Prompting…and why it’s so much more powerful and effective than the old “one-and-done” way we’ve been trained to search via Search Engines.

Today, I want to demonstrate a specific example of this iterative prompting in action.

Full disclosure, though: though I’ve done my best to pare things down and keep it concise, this particular post will probably go past my “two minute” promise.

Gasp!

My Initial Prompt

OK…The initial prompt we’ll start with: Help me develop a business plan for a start up.

There are some obvious shortcomings with this prompt right from the get go—the primary one being a complete lack of context about the start-up itself.

Based on this prompt, however, our Large Language Model will do its absolute best to answer us helpfully and effectively.

Here’s ChatGPT’s response:

….And so on.

There is more to the response, but for the sake of brevity I am editing it down. In this case, AI’s response gives us some good information we can use to iterate—dig deeper into more specificity—our requests.

Iterative Prompt #2

I want to build off this initial conversation.

Here’s my response to ChatGPT: “My start-up is an application that helps people develop customized nutritional plans based on their goals, allergies, and budget. Provide me an executive summary for this.”

ChatGPT’s 2nd Response

In response to this latest query, ChatGPT has given me much more detailed, structured information—even providing a potential name for the company in “NutriPlan.”

Based on slightly more specific information (the actual start-up I want to create), ChatGPT has provided the following without me asking:

  • A timeline to launch

  • A user acquisition target

  • A mission statement

Iterative Prompt #3

Having read GPT’s feedback, here’s what I want to explore further with my next prompt: Provide a detailed outline for what I’ll need to do to launch NutriPlan app within six months.

ChatGPT’s 3rd Response:

And so on…

In response to this, ChatGPT provides me with a three-page breakdown that goes month by month outlining what steps I need to take—far too long to include here in this already too-long post. I’ve summarized as follows:

Month 1: Planning and Research

  • Main Point: Establish goals, conduct market research, define product requirements, and form the core team.

Month 2: Design and Development

  • Main Point: Create wireframes and prototypes, and begin backend and frontend development.

Month 3: Development and Integration

  • Main Point: Continue development, integrate third-party services, and conduct initial testing and user feedback sessions.

Month 4: Finalizing Development and Pre-Launch Preparation

  • Main Point: Complete MVP features, refine the user interface, ensure security and compliance, and develop a marketing plan.

Month 5: Beta Testing and Marketing

  • Main Point: Conduct beta testing, fix bugs, optimize performance, and execute pre-launch marketing campaigns.

Month 6: Launch and Post-Launch Activities

  • Main Point: Officially launch the app, monitor performance, provide customer support, and continue marketing efforts.

None of ChatGPT’s responses are perfect, nor should they be used verbatim to build my own start-up…but they provide a solid foundation and framework that will help me.
