Practical Insights for Skeptics & Users Alike…in (Roughly) Two Minutes or Less

Today we’re going to look at a very simple, very basic prompt framework that you can use to help you guide AI in understanding and fulfilling your requests accurately.
As I said yesterday, good prompting often needs to go beyond the initial prompt. That said, a strong initial prompt can make the entire “conversation” more intuitive and helpful.
This is the RTF prompting framework:
Role
Task
Format
Example Prompt:
You are a digital marketer (Role) looking to create a social media strategy (Task) in a one-pager designed for your CEO (Format).
Role
ChatGPT's versatility allows it to adopt different roles, each suited to specific tasks and industries. By defining a role, you provide context, enabling the AI to generate more relevant and tailored responses.
Here are some roles ChatGPT can assume:
Customer Support Agent
Data Analyst
SEO Specialist
Life Coach
Event Planner
Nutritionist
Fitness Trainer
Language Tutor
Career Counselor
Grant Writer
For the sake of this example, let’s go with “Grant Writer” as our role.
Task
Let’s assign our Grant Writer with something to do! Here are some possible tasks:
Research potential grant opportunities
Write a compelling grant proposal
Develop a project budget for a grant application
Create a timeline for a grant-funded project
Craft an executive summary for a grant proposal
Analyze and interpret grant guidelines
Collaborate with team members to gather project information
Prepare supporting documents for a grant application
For this example, we’ll take “Develop a project budget for a grant application.”
Now we have both the Role (Grant Writer) and the Task (Develop a project budget…) for our prompt.
Let’s give it a format.
Format
How do we want to receive the information from ChatGPT when we submit our prompt. Here are some examples:
Report
Proposal
Executive Summary
Budget Spreadsheet
Timeline Chart
Presentation Slides
Letter
Email
Checklist
Flowchart
I’ll go with “flowchart.”
Now we have a complete RTF prompt: “You are a grant writer who needs to develop a project budget for a grant application due in 6 months. Provide me with a flowchart of the process I can give my team.”
Go ahead and submit the prompt and see what you get!
Tomorrow wraps up Prompt Week. See you then!
